ALTHOUGH they did not win any medals, Filipino bowlers won a “consolation prize” in the 26th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships that ended yesterday at the SCAA Bowling Center in Hong Kong.
After finishing 10th and sixth place, respectively, based on their cumulative tallies in the singles, doubles, trios and team events covering a total of 120 games, the keglers enabled the country to qualify for the IBF Combined World Championships in Kuwait in early October, according to PSC Commissioner Bong Coo.
Coo, a former bowling star who once headed the Philippine Bowling Federation, said the men’s squad of Ian Dychancgo, Patrick Nuqui, Ivan Malig, Jordan Dinham, Emer Gotencio and Danielle Evangelista tallied 26933 over the four events.
Based on the Asian qualifying standards, the men’s squad made the cut of the top 12 countries from the continent that will see action in the world meet, with Malaysia (29433) topping the list and South Korea (28613) and Singapore (2845) coming in second and third, respectively.
The Pinay keglers — Posadas-Wong, Krizziah Tabora-Macatula, Mades Arles, Rachelle Leon, Grace Gella and Danielle Lazo —fared a bit better, winding up with a total of 25578 and was among the 11 countries that will represent Asia at the worlds.
