PBA lowers boom on erring players

WILL they ever learn?

Perhaps, they will, after getting fined and sternly warned by the PBA.

The pro has lowered the boom on erring players who saw action and got involved in a brawl in a “ligang-labas” in Cebu nearly two weeks ago.

Ten players were slapped with fines totaling P590,000 last Wednesday after PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial met with most of the cagers who played in unsanctioned leagues.

Magnolia guard Jio Jalalon and big men Beau Belga of Rain or Shine and JR NLEX’s JR Quiñahan were among the players who suffered most of the repercussions for their ill-advised involvement in tourneys outside Asia’s first play-for-pay league.

Jalalon was hit the hardest with a penalty amounting to P100,000 since he was a repeat offender, having been caught and punished for the same violation three years ago. He was already suspended 15 days without pay by the Hotshots.

Belga and Quinahan were hit with P70,000 penalties, while Elasto Painter Rey Nambatac was meted an additional P50,000 penalty along with Arwind Santos of NorthPort, and the Converge pair of Barkley Eboña and Alec Stockton.

Rain or Shine’s Jhonard Clarito and Vic Manuel and Allyn Bulanadi of San Miguel Beer were also fined the same amount.

Batang Pier star Robert Bolick was spared from being handed a fine since his contract with the team has already expired.

The PBA has a rule prohibiting players from showing their wares in an unsanctioned game or “ligang-labas” event unless they were allowed by their mother teams.
