OUT to give his collegiate career more impetus, former Emilio Aguinaldo College prized big man Allen Liwag has opted to join College of St. Benilde.
Liwag yesterday officially moved to the Blazers camp after leaving the Generals, a development most welcome to CSB coach Charles Tiu.
“We are thrilled that he will be transferring to us. We feel happy as a program that a young player is entrusting himself to us, so we have a responsibility to guide him as a person and develop him as a player,” Tiu told Malaya-Business Insight.
“He will be a big boost to our team next year and we can’t wait for him to go and start training with us,” he added.
Liwag is convinced he will thrive with the Blazers.
“Malaking karangalan at parehong magandang opportunity po ang ibinigay sa akin ng Benilde at San Beda. Pero kaya ko po pinili ang CSB is, unang-una dahil sa tiwala na ibinigay sa akin ni boss Frank (Lao),” Liwag said, referring to one of the team’s top backers.
“Nakita ko rin na magfi-fit ako sa sistema ni coach Charles (Tiu). Mailalabas ko iyong game ko at made-develop pa iyong weaknesses ko sa court.”
A Cavite native, Liwag was good for 10.2 points and 8.6 rebounds for the Generals in the last NCAA cage wars.
But Liwag suffered an injury that told heavily on EAC’s campaign last season.
The Generals wound up dead-last in the 98th season with a 3-15 record.
In two seasons and 24 games for the San Marcelino-based crew, Liwag averaged 9.87 points, 8.62 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game.
He was also part of the Gilas Pilipinas national team training pool for the third window of the FIBA World Cup Asian qualifiers.
Liwag is currently playing for Pampanga Royce Hotel in the Pilipinas Super League, a squad owned by Jacob Lao and is also set to suit up for the Tiu-mentored Strong Group in the 32nd Dubai International Basketball Tournament that will be held from Jan. 29-Feb. 5.
