Jane recalls life before Darna

In the local showbiz industry, it is seldom that siblings attain the same status at the same time. Consider: Fernando Poe Jr. and Andy Poe (who was the real Fernando Kelly Poe, Jr.), Janice and Gelli de Belen, Barretto sisters Gretchen, Marjorie and Claudine, Charlene Gonzales-Muhlach and Richard Bonnin, Ara Mina and Cristine Reyes, Ian and Lotlot de Leon, Toni and Alex Gonzaga, among others. Notice that when one of the siblings is at the top of his or her game, the other would be in the shadows. Biding his or her time, ika nga.

This may be observed in the case of brothers Derek and Andrew Ramsay. Now that Derek has settled down with wife Ellen Adarna, Andrew seems striking while the iron is hot.

Andrew may be considered a newbie, but he studied acting at an early age and even went abroad to learn the craft. He has also starred in thought-provoking projects, including

“Living in the Dead of Night” by writer-director David Olson and also “Ginhawa” (“Solace”), which is part of Cinemalaya 18.

Andrew topbills the movie about an aspiring boxer who takes his fighting chances to continue his brother’s legacy. Against his mother’s wishes, Anton leaves their small town to pursue boxing in Manila. Unfortunately, the young man sees the ugly truth of the brutal sport.

Lucky for Andrew that he has the support of his family. Derek and Ellen made sure to catch the recent premiere of “Ginhawa” at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP).

“Ginhawa” is a film by Christian Lat.

She and her mom would commute from Laguna and would share crackers to stave off hunger.

JANE DE LEON

At the grand press con of Darna last Monday, lead star Jane de Leon was emotional when she recalled her humble beginnings. The 23-year-old related how she and her mom would commute from Laguna to audition and also attend workshops. They hardly had money for food, she said, so they would stave off hunger by having crackers.

“Ngayon pwede na may palaman na ham and cheese,” she quipped.

She has gone a long way — and now she is all set to fly in the TV series directed by no less than award-winning director Chito S. Roño.

The master director is all praises for Jane, admiring her for her dedication to the role and doing everything to improve her craft.

“When I told her we needed to cut her hair, she immediately said yes — no hesitation whatsoever,” he said.

He said viewers will also see Jane’s versatility because she plays other roles in the series, aside from the superheroine.

Darna, the series, will start airing on Monday, August 15 on the Kapamilya Channel, A2Z, Jeepney TV, and TV5 and will also be available on Kapamilya Online Live, iWantTFC, and The Filipino Channel.

We would like to thank those who made sure our recent birthday was memorable. Thank you to June Torrejon and also to Aga Muhlach and wife Charlene and of course, their kids.

We were touched by what Aga wrote on his social media account, even though he knows we don’t use it: “My manager, mother, adviser, my guardian angel. Name it, she did it for me. I love you very much. Forever grateful.”

“Happy birthday, Tita Ethel Ramos! God bless you. And yes, wala kame picture together in the past 30 years! Haha always ‘yan group photo!”

Thank you, love you.
