JUSTICE Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla yesterday said the National Bureau of Investigation is “on the right track” in the efforts to find and arrest former Bureau of Corrections chief Gerald Bantag who is the subject of arrest warrants issued by the Muntinlupa and Las Piñas regional courts in connection with last year’s killing of radio broadcaster Percival “Percy Lapid” Mabasa and inmate Cristito Palana Villamor.
Remulla made the remarks in an interview on CNN Philippines, a day after he disclosed that Bantag sent a second surrender feeler. He said authorities continue to pursue Bantag and his deputy, Ricardo Zulueta, despite the surrender feelers.
“They (NBI) have an idea where they are. They are on the right track and they can find Bantag in a short time,” he added, without elaborating.
On Tuesday, Remulla said he believes Bantag and Zulueta are a “package deal.”
He added that one of the topics being discussed was the place of detention if ever they are arrested or if they decide to surrender, adding that authorities are amenable to a special arrangement on their place of detention considering the risks if they are detained with other ordinary inmates.
Remulla said it seems Bantag and Zulueta’s main concern is for them not to be detained in a BuCor facility.
