Pumaren, Green Archers stay optimistic

STAYING optimistic and determined despite the dreaded COVID-19 pandemic should help La Salle get ready if and when the UAAP 84th season pushes through.

That approach since the start of the coronavirus crisis remains, according to Green Archers coach Derrick Pumaren.

“They are just staying positive and motivated,” Pumaren told Malaya-Business Insight yesterday. “We will be ready.”

Pumaren said virtual training is still simply fine for his charges more than a year since scrimmages and tournaments were put on hold.

“Same pa rin. Online training pa rin,” Pumaren said.

The league is eyeing to launch its new season in September should it get the green light from the government.

That plan, however, seems unlikely, especially with the country’s pandemic woes having no end in sight.

Although it is being discussed, the UAAP is also not too hot on holding online events.

The Commission on Higher Education released the safety and health guidelines for the resumption of collegiate training last October.

Six months after, collegiate leagues are still waiting for the go-signal from the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases.

In December last year, the Philippine Sports Commission also crafted guidelines for the conduct of collegiate tourneys.

The UAAP was set to launch its 83rd season this month under a bubble-set up and possibly with only the centerpiece sports such as basketball and volleyball, but it did not push through.

The cancellation of the 83rd season marked the first time the UAAP called off a season since World War II from 1941 to 1946.
