AMBASSADOR to the United States Jose Manuel Romualdez yesterday said he is scheduled to hold a meeting in Washington with US officials to discuss, among other things, the schedule of a meeting between US President Donald Trump and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
In an interview with radio dzBB, Romualdez expressed hope the meeting will take place in the second quarter of this year, noting the two leaders are “busy.”
Malacañang earlier said the two leaders have expressed their desire to hold a meeting but a date has yet to be set.
Marcos has congratulated Trump when he was sworn into power in January, saying his government is ready to work closely with the Republican administration.
Washington is a close ally and partner of Manila in the economic and security sphere.
The two countries have a mutual defense treaty that binds them to come to each other’s aid in case of foreign invasion or aggression.
Washington said the treaty covered Filipino troops, ships or aircraft in the South China Sea, a major flashpoint due to aggressive moves by Beijing which claims almost the entire waterway as its own.
