THE Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said it has provided “critical support” for people affected by the conflict in Gaza.
OCD administrator Ariel Nepomuceno, also executive director of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), led the turnover of the supplies to Jordanian officials last Friday at Camp Aguinaldo.
Nepomuceno on Saturday said the ceremony “marks a significant moment in our efforts to support global humanitarian initiatives.”
He said the assistance — composed of 8,323 bonnets, 3,187 pairs of gloves, and 20 blankets — is the Philippines’ contribution to the Humanitarian Air Bridge Campaign of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
“We stand in solidarity with all those impacted by this tragedy and recognize the urgency of the situation,” he said.
Nepomuceno highlighted the importance of the collaboration, noting that aid should be provided it is needed.
“This collaboration is a powerful testament to the strength of international solidarity and the importance of working together in times of crisis. With the ongoing humanitarian needs in Gaza, it is crucial that we step up and provide aid where it is most needed,” he said.
Nepomuceno expressed hope that last Friday’s event “will not only celebrate the successful partnership we have forged but also inspire other Philippine agencies to join future rounds of this important campaign.”
“Together, we can continue to make a meaningful impact on the lives of those in need, both here and abroad,” added Nepomuceno.
In a statement, the OCD – the implementing arm of the NDRRM – said the initiative does not only provide essential aid to those in need but “also reinforces the Philippines’ role as a compassionate partner on the global stage, committed to alleviating human suffering.”
The Gaza conflict started in October 2023 when Hamas militants attacked Israel, killed some 1,200 people, and seized over 250 hostages.
A ceasefire deal took effect on January 19. The conflict has reportedly displaced nearly all of Gaza’s 2.3 million population.
