SEN. Sherwin Gatchalian is open to exploring “alternative pathways” for professionals to become licensed teachers so that senior high school education can be improved further.
During last week’s hearing on Senate Bill No. 2840 which seeks to amend RA 4784 or the Philippine Teachers Professionalization Act of 1994, Gatchalian said alternative pathways should be introduced for individuals to be registered as professional teachers.
He cited an experience of a technical college in Valenzuela City that wants to offer graphic design and computer courses at the senior high school level but funding teachers who can teach these courses remains a challenge.
He said that even though there are graphic designers who want to teach in senior high school, there is no way for them to enter the teaching profession due to the requirement of having a teacher’s license.
“We really need to align our laws and policies with our goals and right now, our goal is to strengthen senior high school,” he said.
