THE Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG) appointed criminal law expert and former Supreme Court spokesperson Theodore “Ted” Te as its interim chair effective June 30.

Te’s appointment was reached by the FLAG National Board during their meeting on June 27.

“He will serve until the general membership convenes to elect new national and regional officers,” the group said.

“FLAG welcomes Ted’s leadership as we look forward to meeting the daunting challenges ahead,” the group added.

Before his appointment, Te was FLAG vice chair for Luzon and regional coordinator for Metro Manila.

Te succeeds human rights lawyer and Akbayan Representative Jose Manuel “Chel” Diokno, who led the group for 22 years.

“FLAG thanks Chel for leading the group with integrity, inspiration and innovation and for his decades-long dedicated service and unstinting efforts to protect the fundamental rights of Filipinos and advance the rule of law in the country,” the group said.

FLAG is a nationwide organization of human rights lawyers in the Philippines. It was founded in 1974 by Sen. Jose Diokno, Lorenzo Tanada, Jose Benedicto, Luis Luna Reyes, and Joker Arroyo.
