THE PNP yesterday declared last Tuesday’s road rage shooting incident at the Edsa Ayala tunnel in Makati City closed, a day after the arrest of the suspect.

“The case is solved because we already arrested the suspect,” PNP spokeswoman Col. Jean Fajardo told a press briefing at Camp Crame, referring to businessman Gerard Raymond Yu.

“He is under custody, he was identified (by witnesses as the gunman) and the case is ready for filing. Based on these parameters of the PNP, this case is considered already solved,” added Fajardo.

Yu was arrested at his residence in Riverside Village in Pasig City last Wednesday morning, less than 24 hours after the shooting.

Seized from him were two caliber 40 pistols, including one that was used in the shooting, based on ballistics examination.

Also seized from Yu was the Mercedez Benz he was driving when he shot the victim, Aniceto Mateo, 65, the driver of a Toyota Innova van.

Police said Yu and Mateo figured in a traffic altercation at the southbound lane of the Edsa Ayala tunnel last Tuesday afternoon. Yu later opened fire at the van, causing Mateo’s death.

Closed-circuit television footage showed the two vehicles were moving at the time of the shooting.

The passengers of the van, a female and a seven-year-old child, were not hurt.

Fajardo said police investigators are still finalizing the documents, including the statements of witnesses, to support the murder complaint set to be lodged against Yu.

Fajardo stressed the PNP has a solid case, saying: “We are confident this person was the one involved (in the shooting incident.”

She noted the empty shell recovered at the crime scene came from the firearm recovered from the Yu. She added that Yu tested positive in a paraffin test.

“The testimony of the companions of the fatality clearly identified the arrested suspect,” added Fajardo.
