Magnitude 5.6 quake hits Isabela

A MAGNITUDE 5.6 earthquake hit Isabela yesterday afternoon, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs said aftershocks are expected from the quake.

The agency said it was not expecting any damage.

The quake occurred at 5:19 p.m., said Phivolcs. Its epicenter was some 18 km northeast of Maconacon, Isabela.

The quake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 55 kilometers, Phivolcs said.

An instrumental Intensity V of shaking was reported in Peñablanca, Cagayan; Intensity IV in Gonzaga, Cagayan, and Intensity III in Ilagan, Isabela.

Diego Mariano, chief of the Office of Civil Defense-Joint Monitoring Center, said “assessment and monitoring” by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council and local disaster risk reduction and management councils were ongoing as of around 7 p.m. — Victor Reyes
