PRESIDENT Marcos Jr. has declared June 28, a Wednesday, a regular holiday throughout the country in observance of Eid’l Adha or the Feast of Sacrifice.

The declaration is contained in Proclamation No. 258, which was signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin by authority of the President, on June 13.

The holiday was recommended by the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) following the 1444 Hijrah Islamic Lunar Calendar.

The NCMF is the body that makes the recommendation based on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s highest religious body.

Under Republic Act No. 9849, Eid’l Adha falls on the 10th day of Zhul Hijja or the 12th month of the Islamic calendar. It is a movable holiday, with the date based on the sighting of the moon.

Eid’l Adha is the second of two Islamic holidays celebrated worldwide each year and is considered holier than Eid’l Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan.

In Islam, the feast honors the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God’s command. It also marks the culmination of the annual Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca or the Hajj.
