THE PNP is conducting an administrative probe against a Camp Crame policeman whose service firearm was taken and brought to a Bulacan school by his 12-year-old kid who ended up dead after accidentaly firing the gun.
Col. Redrico Maranan, chief of the PNP’s Public Information Office, said probers will look into the possible lapses of the Executive Master Sergeant assigned with the Directorate for Police Community Relations.
“We want to determine the circumstances why the child was able to access (the firearm),” Maranan said of the victim, a Grade 6 student of the Benito Nieto Elementary School in Barangay Muzon, San Jose Del Monte City in Bulacan.
Maranan said investigators will check if the policeman complied with regulations for cops to keep their firearms in a “secured place” and out of reach of children.
“We are going to determine if he really secured his service firearm or not. That is part of the administrative investigation that we are conducting against the father,” said Maranan.
“We (policemen) should secure our firearms inside our homes. There might be times when we may forget this because we are tired. Nevertheless, this is not a reason for us to be negligent,” said Maranan.
Maranan said policemen should lock their firearms in a cabinet or place them in areas high enough not to be reached by children.
“We’ve been reminding our soldiers about that and this (incident) serves as a reminder for our policemen not to be negligent in keeping their firearms,” said Maranan.
Police earlier said the boy brought his father’s handgun to the school last Thursday morning. While he was playing with the gun in the school’s comfort room, it suddenly fired, hitting him.
