WITH just two days left in the voter registration period for the next Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE), the Commission on Elections (Comelec) yesterday issued a last-minute appeal to the public to take time to get registered.
In a social media post, Elections chairman George Garcia urged eligible individuals to apply to become registered voters on or before the January 31 deadline (Tuesday).
“We are again inviting our countrymen to get registered so that they can vote. Voter registration is already ending on January 31, 2023,” Garcia said.
The poll chief said voter registration activities are accessible nationwide, including at shopping malls via the poll body’s satellite offices and its “Register Anywhere” project.
“We hope you will visit the registration sites in your local Comelec offices as well as satellite registration in selected malls,” said Garcia.
Eligible to get registered as regular or barangay voters are Filipino citizen who are at least 18 years of age on or before the day of the barangay elections, a resident of the Philippines for at least one year and in the place wherein he/she proposes, to vote for at least 6 months immediately preceding Election Day and are not otherwise disqualified by law.
For SK voters, eligible to register as youth voters are Filipino citizens who are at least 15 but not more than 30 years of age, residing in the barangay for at least six months on or before the Sangguniang Kabataan elections, and are not otherwise disqualified by law.
Voter registration activities resumed last December 12, 2022 and will end on January 31, 2023.
The Comelec has repeatedly stated that it is no longer extending the voter registration period for the next BSKE.
