FROM seeing a high of 35,000 infections per day three weeks ago, the average number of new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases in the country has dropped to just around 8,000, data from the independent OCTA Research showed yesterday.
For the period February 1 until 5, the daily average was down to 8,422 new cases, OCTA fellow Guido David said, adding: “The number of new COVID-19 cases around the country continues to decrease.”
During the period January 25 to 31 the average daily cases throughout the country stood at 17,025.
The current average is also a huge drop from the 34,958 new cases for the period of January 11 to 17.
The improvement, according to David, has led to the reproduction number in the entire country dropping to 0.55 as of February 2, from 0.93 on January 26.
The seven-day positivity rate in the entire country also decreased from 34 percent to 24 percent.
Given the current trend in cases, David said it is possible that infections would go down to 4,000 to 5,000 cases per day by Valentine’s Day.
“The current trends project to 1,000 to 2,000 by end of February,” he added.
OCTA urged the public to continue observing minimum public health standards so cases would continue to dip and meet the projections.
