PRESIDENT Marcos Jr. has designated an Army brigade commander as the new chief of the Joint Task Force-National Capital Region (JTF-NCR), which supervises all military operations in Metro Manila.

Armed Forces chief Lt. Gen. Bartolome Bacarro installed Col. Alexei Musñgi as the JFT-NCR commander in rites held at Camp Aguinaldo yesterday morning.

Musñgi succeeded Brig. Gen. Marceliano Teofilo, who had earlier assumed command as head of the Intelligence Service of the AFP.

Before his designation as JFT-NCR chief, Musñgi was the commander of the 102nd Brigade based in Zamboanga Sibugay. Before that, Musñgi served as assistant chief of staff for operations of the Philippine Army and commander of the Army’s 48th Infantry Battalion.

The JTF-NCR, previously known as NCR Command and NCR Defense Command, has played a key role in quelling past attempts to overthrow the government.

It is engaged in efforts to contain communist threats in Metro Manila and has been helping the PNP keep peace and order during the State of the Nation Address of the President and during anti-government rallies in the metropolis.

“Col. Musñgi shall surely be able to steer the JTF-NCR into addressing the complexities of Metro Manila’s security environment,” Bacarro said. “Handling this immense responsibility entails expertise in security operations, intelligence, and inter-agency collaboration in order to address multi-faceted security concerns and promptly respond to emergencies.”

He said Musñgi’s “wealth of knowledge in intelligence, operations, and civil-military engagements, training, and personnel management shall enhance JTF-NCR’s capabilities in performing various roles in keeping the security and stability of Metro Manila.”
