FROM 17,382 last Saturday, 16,953 new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases were reported by the Department of Health yesterday, along with 20 additional deaths.

In its latest bulletin, the DOH said total infections in the country rose to 3,545,680, counting the 18,638 reported last Friday, while the death toll climbed to 53,891, which included 68 last Friday and 70 last Saturday, for a case fatality rate of 1.52 percent.

The current positivity rate in the Philippines stood at 31.4 percent among the 56,078 tested samples on January 28.

There were 202,864 active cases, with over 186,000 mild cases and more than 11,200 asymptomatic cases.

The health department also reported 27,638 additional recoveries, raising the number of survivors to 3,288,925.

The PNP said 111 more police personnel have contracted the COVID-19 virus, down from 132 the previous day.

The new cases brought to 1,597 the active cases in the police force as of yesterday.

The PNP has recorded a total of 48,086 COVID-19 cases in its ranks since 2020 — 46,363 recoveries, 1,597 active cases, and 126 deaths.

“This is one of the challenges faced by the PNP,” said PNP spokeswoman Col. Jean Fajardo, referring to the increasing number of police personnel getting infected by the virus.

“Our policemen are not immune to the pandemic. In fact, around 18,000 (police personnel) were already infected by COVID-19,” Fajardo added.

Meanwhile, 218,284 or 96.93 percent of all policemen have been fully-vaccinated against COVID-19 and 5,987 or 2.85 percent are partially vaccinated or have received the first dose of two-dose vaccines.

This means 933 or 0.42 percent of police personnel have yet to be vaccinated. Of the unvaccinated, 456 have valid reasons not to be inoculated while 477 have none.
