AUP new medical school aces recent physician’s exams
The first medicine graduates of the new medical school of the Adventist University of the Philippines (AUP) achieved highly in the March 2021 Physician Licensure Exams (PLE), with a passing rate of 93% against the 64% national passing rate.
Dr. Vanda Charisse Costillas Dejolde, one of the 15 AUP board passers, placed sixth out of the 1,234 who passed the exams. The AUP College of Medicine curriculum is unique in Philippine medical education because it produces “Five-Star Plus” physicians. Graduates in this medical school are trained to be clinicians, educators, researchers, social mobilizers, and managers– the “Five Star” envisioned in the World Health Organization’s proposed ideal profile of a physician. The “Plus” in their training is to be a “physician missionary.”
These medicine students trained in medical science and whole-person care, integrating spiritual and emotional support with crisis intervention. An added emphasis in their curriculum is the focus on preventive and lifestyle medicine. The graduates trained for three years in AUP, Silang, Cavite, and the succeeding year for their clerkship at the Batangas Medical Center and the Adventist Medical Center-Manila.
