DOT-6 promotes sustainable tourism, launches first leg of Western Visayas International Open Water Swim Circuit

A total of 146 swimmers were captivated by the breathtaking waters, intimate interaction with nature, and a surprise cash prize during the opening leg of the Western Visayas International Open Water Swim Circuit, held in Sipalay City from February 17 to 18, 2024.

The event, hosted by Sipalay City, marked the first of four legs organized by the Department of Tourism Region VI (DOT-6) to promote sustainable tourism. Following Sipalay City, the next legs will take place in Sicogon Island in Carles, Iloilo on April 14; Taklong Island in Nueva Valencia, Guimaras, on June 30; and culminate in Boracay Island in Malay, Aklan on September 22.

DOT Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco emphasized the event’s significance beyond a mere race, highlighting its role in promoting environmental conservation and community engagement. Regional Director Crisanta Marlene P. Rodriguez stressed the importance of mindful tourism to protect the environment.

The region aims to attract adventurers and sports enthusiasts through its aviation connectivity and stunning landscapes. Mayor Maria Gina Lizares expressed pride in Sipalay City’s environmental conservation efforts.

Organized in partnership with the Zamboanga Open Water Swimming Club, Inc., the event featured three distance categories: 1.5K, 3K, and 5K, attracting participants from various age groups and countries. Notable attendees included two-time Olympian swimmer Birgit Koschischek, who praised the swim’s oceanic experience.

Future legs promise diverse swim routes and distances, emphasizing sustainability and the region’s hospitality. Finishers of the Sipalay City leg received medals and cash prizes sponsored by local officials.
