IN October of this year, the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) is poised to mark the 2023 IP Month and commemorate the 26th anniversary of the Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Act (IPRA). The chosen theme for this significant occasion is “Pagpapayaman ng Pamanang Kultural at Katutubong Yaman Tungo sa mas Maliwanag na Kinabukasan para sa Bagong Pilipinas,” which translates to “Enriching Cultural Heritage and Indigenous Wealth Towards a Brighter Future for a New Philippines.”
Throughout the entire month of October, a dynamic array of activities has been scheduled. This extensive celebration brings together a diverse range of stakeholders, with the active participation of civil society organizations, national government agencies, private companies, in close collaboration with NCIP and its partner indigenous cultural communities/indigenous peoples (ICC/IP).
The event lineup includes a wide spectrum of events, such as information, education, and communication campaigns, cultural sensitivity orientations, inter-agency field visitations, tree planting initiatives, capacity-building workshops, jubilant festivals, spirited celebrations, enlightening webinars, benevolent medical and wellness missions, mesmerizing cultural dance performances, thought-provoking presentations, a daring barefoot challenge, a captivating photo exhibit, vibrant trade fairs, exhilarating indigenous games, and the heartwarming assistance and equipment turnovers.
There will also be scholarly conferences, spirited poster-slogan contests, artistic assemblies, support provided to Dayaw 2023, cordial courtesy visits, and heartfelt thanksgiving ceremonies.
Adding to the grandeur of the celebration, two remarkable fashion shows are on the calendar. “Gayak 2: Dahon Fashion Show,” scheduled for October 27, 2023, at the Estancia Mall, Capitol Commons, Pasig City, will spotlight the innovative designs of the masterful JM Ganuan, who has crafted his creations using leaves as the primary material. And on October 29, 2023, at the Eastwood Richmonde Hotel, “Kislap 2: Lakbay Hibla” will take center stage, showcasing the rich tapestry of Philippine indigenous fabrics through a unique travel-inspired fashion show.
In light of this, the NCIP extends a warm invitation to individuals from all walks of life to join and support the celebration and commemoration of the 2023 IP Month and 26th IPRA Anniversary. This event is a remarkable opportunity to foster appreciation for the rich cultural heritage and the collective wealth of our Indigenous Peoples, contributing to a brighter, more inclusive future for the Philippines.
