Billionaire Elon Musk’s Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) local unit Starlink has pushed back its commercial launch in the country to middle of 2023, according to the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT).
Initially, Starlink is expected to launch its services before the end of the year.
Philip Varilla, DICT assistant secretary, said during the recent EJAP Infrastructure Forum that Starlink’s launchwill be delayed as the company needs to launch over 4,000 satellites to make the services available in the country.
“By middle of next year, what we intend to do is to connect to Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas, those that are really far from our telecommunications infrastructure, so that they will be connected to the internet,” Varilla said. – Myla Iglesias
