Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) posted a slight increase, by 0.4 percent, in power sales volume in January 2025 from a year ago.

The company said last month’s consolidated power sales volume stood at 4,061 gigawatt hours (GWh) from 4,045 GWh, a high base pushed by warmer temperatures brought about by El Niño during the period.

Ferdinand Geluz, Meralco chief revenue officer, told reporters over the weekend the growth recorded last month was mainly driven by positive performance of the residential and commercial segments, despite softer demand compared to last year.

Geluz said long weekend holidays had affected household consumption and business operations.

Residential sales stood at 1,425 GWh, 0.2 percent higher versus January 2024 at 1,422 GWh, Geluz said.

January commercial sales reached 1,564 GWh, 1.04 percent higher from 1,548 GWh in January 2024, he added.

Geluz said January industrial sales hit 1,059 GWh, 0.3 percent lower than the 1,063 GWh in January 2024 due to intermittent shutdowns of key accounts in food and beverages and steel.
