Light Rail Manila Corp. (LRMC), the private operator of Light Rail Transit (LRT) line 1, yesterday said it has completed the signaling upgrade that will improve LRT-1’s capacity and operation.

In a statement, LRMC said it has upgraded the signaling system to Alstom after a series of test runs and trial runs last November 28 and January 23 and 30.

LRT-1 adopts advanced communication and modern technology to continuously control and monitor the operation of its trains. The upgrading of signaling system will allow it to improve capacity and performance across the line, enabling more trains with better connections and greater reliability.

LRMC also said the new signaling system along the existing line — Baclaran to Balintawak station — will facilitate the testing, commissioning and operation for revenue service of the 4th generation train sets which is targeted to start in mid-2022.

“LRMC (has) successfully migrated to the new Alstom signaling system… to also improve the total traffic control system of LRT-1 while the operation was suspended on three Sundays,” said Enrico Benipayo, LRMC chief operating officer.

Meanwhile, LRMC noted the casting of a total of 203 pi-girders from the future Dr. A Santos station until Redemptorist station, as part of the LRT-1 Cavite Extension Phase 1 project.

The construction of phase 1 of the 11.7-kilometer LRT-1 Cavite Extension began in September 2019. Once completed, five new stations will be added to the existing LRT-1 line: Redemptorist, MIA, Asiaworld, Ninoy Aquino and Dr. Santos. – Myla Iglesias
