Engineering and construction firm First Balfour Inc. has signed a contract with affiliate company, Energy Development Corp. (EDC) for its planned three Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facilities.
In a statement, First Balfour said under the agreement signed last month, the company will undertake engineering, procurement and construction works for the balance of plant and connection assets of the BESS facilities.
EDC said the BESS facilities will have a combined capacity of 40 megawatts (MW) and will be co-located with the company’s existing geothermal power plants in Sorsogon, Leyte and Negros Oriental.
EDC’s BESS facilities will be used to store excess power from its geothermal plants and supply the stored energy when and where it is needed.
The BESS itself will be supplied by Fluence, a global provider of energy storage products and services and optimization software for renewables and storage.
First Balfour said EDC’s BESS project is the first of its kind in the company’s portfolio.
