The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has asked for a P127 million budget in 2024 for consumer protection and education, according to Jean Pacheco, assistant secretary.
In line with the celebration of the Consumer Welfare Month (CWM) this October, Pacheco noted the importance of educating the public on their rights as consumers, not just on prices but also on unfair trade practices.
In a press conference, DTI Secretary Alfredo Pascual said activities related to the CWM would raise awareness of consumers that there is an agency that is looking after their welfare.
But he said consumers should also be responsible and informed saying “empowered consumers can drive positive change in our economy and society.”
This year’s CWM theme is “GenS: Generation Sustainable.”
“We call consumers to have a mindset of practicing the 7Rs of Sustainability: Rethink, Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Repurpose, and Repair to ensure responsible usage of our resources leading to a more sustainable future for all.”
