At a recent press conference, Municipal Mayor Joan Amo of Laurel, Batangas said they are in talks with the Bamboo Foundation for bamboo planting in order to make their town green again.
“This will be included in the livelihood and tourism program,” Amo said, adding they will also strengthen the town’s Tilapia Festival set on June 21 and is inviting travelers to visit the town.
She also mentioned the Task Force Alagang Lawa Housing Project, which will benefit 164 homeless families from barangays Gulod and Buso-buso who were greatly affected by the volcanic eruption.
“I can’t let my affected residents to just go back and use the tents,” she said.
Each temporary housing costs P50,000 and was designed by the municipal engineer.
“We believe that in rehabilitation, we need livelihood and shelter,” Amo said.
“God has reasons for allowing this to happen,” she added, noting that everyone collaborates in rebuilding the town.
As the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology lowerered Taal Volcano’s status to Alert Level 2, residents have been allowed to return to their homes. Displaced residents whose houses were damaged are well taken cared of at the evacuation centers, Amo said.
The scaling down of Taal Volcano’s status means that the local government will immediately start construction of the housing project, she said.
“We are blessed that stakeholders have pledged houses for the unfortunate locals,” Amo said.
To reawaken tourism in the area, the local government will promote the town activities.
“We have reinforced our contingency plan for disaster evacuation route,” Amo said.
