As the expanded train fare discount rolls out this week, Metro Manila’s elderly and PWD commuters numbering about 20 million can look forward to lighter wallets and smoother rides—every day of the week.
Starting July 16, senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs) can ride three major train lines at half the regular fare. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. officially launched the expanded subsidy at the LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3 stations, coinciding with the 47th National Disability Week (July 17–23).

From 20% to 50%
• Previously, seniors and PWDs were entitled to a 20 percent fare reduction.
• Under Marcos’s directive, that discount now matches the 50 percent rate already granted to students as of June.
• The boost will benefit an estimated 13 million senior citizens and 7 million PWDs across Metro Manila.
“Our students, PWDs, senior citizens truly need our help because their income is very limited. That’s why we thought of this program as something we can do to support our commuters who are PWDs and senior citizens,” President Marcos explained at the MRT-3 Santolan-Annapolis southbound station.
