BMW last week unveiled the R 12 nineT, commemorating the “100 years of BMW Motorrad” anniversary. This model succeeds the R nineT, which was introduced a decade ago in celebration of BMW Motorrad’s 90th anniversary.

The new BMW R 12 nineT seamlessly carries forward the fascination and tradition of BMW Motorrad’s century-long legacy. Like its predecessor, the BMW R nineT of 2013, the R 12 nineT is a purist and robust classic roadster, offering an abundance of conceptual possibilities for virtually limitless customization and personalization.

“The R nineT and its customization concept introduced the new Heritage experience during BMW Motorrad’s 90th birthday and has become an essential cornerstone of our model range. The new R 12 nineT continues the successful heritage story surrounding the legendary BMW boxer engines with an even more classic and minimalist design language, increased freedom in customization, and, last but not least, new and innovative technology,” Dr. Markus Schramm, Head of BMW Motorrad said.

Retaining the original 1200 boxer engine, which now features a redesigned airbox and exhaust system, the R 12 nineT delivers a timeless riding experience.

A century ago, the first BMW motorcycle, the R 32, was already powered by the flat-twin engine. The unmistakable design of the boxer engine, coupled with its powerful acceleration, distinctive power delivery, signature sound, and smooth operation, quickly made it a legendary symbol for BMW motorcycles. Carrying on this grand tradition, the new R 12 nineT features an air/oil-cooled boxer engine. The “12” in the model name indicates the engine capacity, as seen in various models throughout BMW Motorrad’s history, including the current R 18.

Embracing an even more classic and purist design, the R 12 nineT showcases meticulous attention to detail and offers expanded customization options.

Building upon its predecessor, the new R 12 nineT harmoniously blends the robust nature of the boxer engine, the design aesthetics inspired by traditional motorcycle eras, innovative technology, and a modular concept that grants riders maximum customization possibilities. Stripped down to its essence, it exudes a strong emotional appeal. The bike’s design focused on achieving a purist and classic look, paying meticulous attention to every detail.

Edgar Heinrich, Head of Design BMW Motorrad, explains, “The purist design language is defined by the clear tank/seat/rear line, reminiscent of the traditional /5 models or the legendary R 90 S from the 1970s. At first glance, the tank itself embodies a classic BMW boxer tank, featuring the characteristic bend in the lower edge and offering a familiar knee contact point. The new R 12 nineT also incorporates side covers in the frame triangle area, reflecting the authentic Roadster look–a nod to BMW motorcycles of the 1970s.”

The redesigned front mudguard, LED main headlamp with a black-surround light guide element, and the two round instruments in a vintage style further exemplify the meticulous attention to detail. True to tradition, the original BMW Motorrad accessory range provides appealing customization options. With customization in mind, the R 12 nineT also includes an integrated LED rear light unit within the seat, facilitating the realization of a “short tail” design.
