TRUCK MAKER Scania is making significant strides in the mining sector with its innovative electric vehicle (EV) technology, particularly through the introduction of its all-electric tipper truck, the Scania 25P XT, which has been operational since late 2022 at LKAB’s Malmberget iron ore mine in Sweden, represents a groundbreaking advancement as the first electric heavy tipper truck designed specifically for mining operations. This vehicle is capable of carrying a load of up to 49 tons.
The collaboration between Scania and LKAB underscores a shared commitment to sustainability and decarbonization within the mining industry. Scania’s electric tipper is not only aimed at improving operational efficiency but also at significantly reducing carbon emissions associated with traditional diesel-powered trucks. The initiative aligns with LKAB’s goal of becoming one of the most sustainable mining companies globally, focusing on fossil-free operations throughout its supply chain.
In addition to the electric tipper, Scania is also developing a range of battery electric trucks that enable 100 percent emissions-free operation. These trucks are equipped with advanced electric propulsion systems and can cover substantial distances on a single charge, making them suitable for various mining applications. Scania’s battery electric trucks are designed to meet the growing demand for sustainable transport solutions in the mining sector, particularly as more companies seek to reduce their environmental impact.
In late 2025, the company will debut a fleet of autonomous rigid G 560 8×4 tippers at Element 25’s Butcherbird manganese mine in Western Australia. This initiative represents a significant step towards integrating autonomous technology into mining operations, enhancing safety and efficiency while further reducing emissions.
