Tech meets trees: Philippines showcases satellite-powered forest protection system

The Philippines advanced its environmental conservation efforts as the CarbonPH Coalition launched its groundbreaking “Carbon Circuit” initiative, merging cutting-edge satellite technology with forest management strategies.

The session, a part of the CarbonPH Coalition Educational Series (CCES) organized by the Aboitiz Foundation Inc, introduced the Satellite Land Monitoring System (SLMS) and Safeguards Information System (SIS), designed to revolutionize how the country monitors and protects its forests. These cutting-edge systems will provide real-time forest cover tracking, support REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation) strategies, and ensure transparency in its environmental reporting.

Key highlights include comprehensive forest monitoring capabilities, enhanced protection safeguards for local and indigenous communities, and the identification of sustainable  investment opportunities in the forestry sector. The initiative represents a significant technological leap in the Philippines’ commitment to sustainable resource management and climate action.

Aboitiz Foundation president Ginggay Hontiveros-Malvar welcomed 30 corporate executives to the presentation on Tuesday, 24 June at AIM’s Aboitiz Tech Space, with Atty. Ray Thomas Kabigting, assistant director of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Forest Management Bureau, delivering opening remarks.

The CCES functions as an executive learning platform connecting private sector leaders with environmental restoration and sustainable business practices.
