SPOTLIGHT: Iloilo City Seaport modernization

The Iloilo City Seaport is undergoing a significant upgrade, marked by a PHP2.35 billion modernization project approved by the Board of Investments (BOI). This initiative, led by the International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI), aim to elevate the old Iloilo Commercial Port Complex into a state-of-the-art facility that will bolster economic growth in the Visayas region.

A part of a 25-year Port Terminal Management Contract between ICTSI and the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), it will involve substantial investments in advanced cargo handling equipment, cutting-edge information technology systems, and enhanced civil infrastructure. The goal is to improve operational efficiency and expand cargo handling capabilities at the Visayan Container Terminal (VCT).

With the modernization, the port will be able to accommodate larger foreign vessels, significantly increasing its cargo capacity. It is also expected create over 3,000 jobs directly and indirectly, benefiting the local economy and related industries across Panay Island and neighboring areas. Trade Undersecretary Ceferino Rodolfo emphasized that this initiative is vital for national development, facilitating the movement of goods and people across the islands while strengthening the country’s position in international trade.

In 2024, the transportation and storage sector contributed PHP779.54 billion to the Philippine economy, accounting for approximately 4.1% of the gross domestic product (GDP). The modernization of the Iloilo City Seaport is anticipated to further enhance these figures by improving logistics performance and attracting new investments in the region.

The modernization of the Philippine maritime sector is crucial for enhancing economic growth and improving connectivity across the archipelago. As the DOTr marks its 126th anniversary, ongoing projects under President Marcos Jr.’s administration reflect a strong commitment to revitalizing this essential industry. With strategic planning and collaboration among various stakeholders, the Philippines is poised to navigate toward a more prosperous maritime future.
