In a bold push to catapult the Philippines into the digital age, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has made technological transformation for small businesses a cornerstone of his economic agenda. While large corporations have long embraced digitalization, the country’s backbone – its micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) –are now getting the digital boost they desperately need.

The Philippine government isn’t just talking about digital transformation – it’s delivering tangible results, rolling out ambitious initiatives that are already changing how small businesses operate across the archipelago.

The Bagong Pilipinas Marketplace, launched by the Department of Trade Trade and Industry (DTI), gives MSMEs a dedicated B2B e-commerce platform for “Proudly Filipino” products. This digital showcase increases visibility for small businesses in both local and international markets.

The MSME Development Plan 2023-2028 incorporates digitalization and AI as core strategies to boost competitiveness. It establishes Shared Services Facilities to reduce operational costs and introduces AI-driven tools like machine learning-based credit scoring to speed up loan approvals. The plan also increases capitalization for the Small Business Corporation, making financial assistance more accessible.

Infrastructure improvements through the National Fiber Backbone expansion bring high-speed connectivity to previously underserved areas. This improved broadband access allows even the smallest businesses to participate in digital commerce.

Financial inclusion efforts directed by President Marcos have strengthened digital lending options for MSMEs. The integration of AI-powered financial platforms simplifies access to credit and government services.

The eGovPH app and digital national ID system streamline identity verification, reducing paperwork and enabling faster, more secure transactions for small businesses.

The administration’s digitalization program is part of a broader five-point DTI strategy to uplift MSMEs, emphasizing the need for digital skills, wider connectivity, and the use of social media and e-commerce platforms to reach broader markets.

These efforts are designed to help MSMEs overcome barriers such as financial constraints, technical expertise gaps, and digital literacy, ensuring they are equipped to compete in a globalized, digital-first economy.
