“Filipino athletes deserve world-class facilities.” Guided by this principle, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has transformed Philippine sports in his first 1000 days, investing ₱1.156 billion through the Philippine Sports Commission in 2023 alone.
Modern facilities, nationwide
The administration is modernizing the historic Rizal Memorial Sports Complex with ₱275 million for new athlete dormitories and upgraded facilities. The Ferdinand E. Marcos Memorial Stadium in Ilocos Norte has undergone a ₱1 billion renovation, featuring a 12,000-seat capacity, state-of-the-art track facilities, and a “stadium-park” concept that earned recognition at the 2023 World Architecture Festival in Singapore.
Regional development includes the new 12,000-capacity Sorsogon Sports Arena, Bogo City’s ₱309 million sports complex in Cebu, and a new Philippine Sports Training Center in Bataan.
From grassroots to gold medals
The National Academy of Sports in New Clark City is being fast-tracked to combine education with elite sports training. The Palarong Pambansa now includes weightlifting and pole vault for secondary girls, while the Sports Development Plan 2023-2028 coordinates efforts across all government levels.
Elite athletes receive presidential recognition, enhanced medical support, and specialized training opportunities. Olympic pole vaulter EJ Obiena’s donation of equipment has been complemented by government support through the INSPIRE program, providing free access for young athletes.
These comprehensive investments are creating a new era for Philippine sports, promising not just medals but healthier communities and national pride on the world stage.
