The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), through its social development arm, BPI Foundation (BPIF), has once again partnered with the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) to empower young innovators in addressing challenges in health, environment, disaster preparedness, education, and entrepreneurship.

In December 2024, the BPI-DOST Innovation Awards showcased groundbreaking projects from the top 11 teams representing leading universities. These innovations ranged from tech-driven solutions to grassroots community initiatives, reflecting BPI’s commitment to driving meaningful progress and contributing to sustainable development in the country.

Being the first to adopt emerging technologies, such as the automated teller machine and online banking, is a mindset we consistently nurture. However, our desire to innovate is always rooted in serving our customers,” said TG Limcaoco, BPI President and CEO. “True innovation should be geared toward making every Filipino’s life easier—only then can advancements in science and technology truly mean progress for the nation.”

The Innovation Awards program commenced in September 2024 with an immersive Innovation and Business Workshop featuring esteemed speakers from the National Research Council of the Philippines. Topics included Design Thinking, Innovation & Creative Entrepreneurship, Presentation Skills, Patent processes, Collaboration & Networking, Technology Marketing & Commercialization, and Business Models. These sessions equipped students with essential skills to transform their ideas into impactful solutions.

A distinguished panel of judges evaluated the projects, including Carmina Marquez, executive director of BPIF; Dr. Ryan Corpuz from DOST; Dr. Marie Paz Morales representing the academe; Filipino scientist Dr. Aristotle Ubando; and Dr. Gonzalo Serafica from the business sector. Their actionable feedback ensured that all teams left with valuable insights beyond the competition.

Three teams emerged as winners, each receiving PHP 150,000 in cash prizes and the title of 2024 BPI-DOST Innovation Awardees.

Marquez stated, “We say at BPIF, ‘Kasama Lahat sa Pag-Unlad’—progress is for everyone. Together, we build a future where no one is left behind. Your projects demonstrate that young Filipinos are more than capable of addressing real-world problems with innovative solutions.”

DOST Secretary Dr. Renato U. Solidum, Jr., encouraged finalists to pursue bold ideas for solving national challenges: “Your presence here signals hope—a promise that innovation can drive a sustainable and inclusive future for the Philippines.”

In 2025, BPIF remains committed to fostering innovation by investing in young talent for a sustainable future. Through its partnership with DOST-SEI, BPIF continues to drive initiatives like the BPI-DOST Innovation Awards, combining financial inclusivity with scientific expertise to empower young innovators.

Since 1989, BPI and DOST have consistently supported young Filipino innovators through this program. For more information about the BPI-DOST Innovation Awards and other initiatives, visit https://www.bpifoundation.org/.
