Home improvement and construction supplies retailer Wilcon Depot Inc. is optimistic that business will be better this year.

Rosemarie Ong, Wilcon president, noted signs of further improvement in the economy that could translate to growth opportunities.

The company’s nine-month results have depicted a challenging 2024 with profit down by 22 percent at P2.12 billion compared to P2.73 billion the year prior.

Sales declined by 1 percent to P25.68 billion from P29.94 billion the previous year.

“We have nowhere to go but to really grow and grow… But we see some improvements in all the headwinds that has been happening in the past year. So hopefully, this year will be a better year for us,” Ong said on the sidelines of the Management Association of the Philippines’ inaugural meeting in Taguig City last week.

“We all know that housing and owning your home is very basic. If there’s an American dream, there’s a Filipino dream of owning their own house,” she added.

Ong said Wilcon is moving out of city centers for its expansion. It opened its 100th store in December in Lubao, Pampanga.

Ong, however, declined to provide details of the company’s expansion plans for the year.

She said Wilcon is experimenting with smaller stores and it may start renovating its legacy big-box stores.

“Our focus is to really renovate (the older stores), to be more adaptive to the business. How we can make their shopping experience more seamless, more convenient and more comfortable,” she said.

“Wilcon is already 48 years old, and the company’s stores were getting older and there were many things to fix in these stores, which contributes almost all of the company’s revenues,” she added.

The performance of Wilcon’s smaller formats were also good, Ong said.
