Toyota’s next-gen battery plans gets govt nod

TOYOTA Motor Corporation’s development and production plans for its next-generation batteries (performance version) and all-solid-state batteries have been certified by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). This certification is part of the Japanese government’s “Supply Assurance Plan for Batteries.”

The certification covers the production of next-generation batteries at Prime Planet Energy & Solutions, Inc. (PPES) and Primearth EV Energy Co., Ltd. (PEVE) which starting October will be known as Toyota Battery Co., Ltd. The approval covers the research, development, and production of all-solid-state batteries. Production of the next-generation batteries is expected to start gradually from 2026, with a scale of 9GWh/year.

This certification aligns with METI’s “Initiatives to Ensure A Stable Supply of Batteries” policy, which aims to strengthen the production infrastructure of batteries in Japan. The government is providing support to maintain and enhance manufacturing capabilities and technologies within the Japanese battery industry.

Toyota aims to contribute to the further development of the battery industry and strengthen the production infrastructure of batteries in Japan. By enhancing the competitiveness of batteries, Toyota also seeks t o improve the marketability of electrified vehicles and achieve carbon neutrality.
