LEGENDARY, not just iconic. That’s the legacy of the Suzuki Jimny.
Never in its 40-year plus history of ruggedness and off-roading prowess has the small sports utility vehicle never had more than three doors. The LJ10, considered to be the first-generation Jimny in 1970 only had two doors. It was made as a tiny, lightweight 4×4 to meet “kei-car” specifications and was originally designed for farmers, and later got the attention of outdoor enthusiasts
The 5-door Suzuki Jimny’s official launch was on January 25, 2024 at The Cove, Okada Manila. I joined my editor Sir Tribs in my first event launch coverage. It was impressive but not as impressive as the car itself.
“The car isn’t just a bigger sibling to the legendary off-roader; it’s a bold statement that two extra doors can make all the difference,” Sir Tribs said. This transformation elevates the Jimny from cult classic to practical powerhouse, ready to conquer both hearts and terrains.
In various speeches, Suzuki Philippines executives highlighted the vehicle’s significance as a symbol of adventure and innovation, emphasizing its position as a lightweight, compact, and authentic off-roader.
The addition of two extra doors, significantly improving passenger access and comfort. The wheelbase also stretches by 340mm, offering increased legroom and cargo space.
Despite the growth spurt, the 5-door Jimny retains the classic boxy design that makes it instantly recognizable. While the two extra doors open up new possibilities, the familiar silhouette, upright A-pillars, and flat clamshell bonnet remain, exuding off-road capability and rugged charm. It’s still the Jimny we know and love, just with a touch of practicality and grown-up appeal.
In the discussions that ensued, I had considered to recommend the car to my younger brother–it fits him perfectly! A single, young man, with a handful of friends, loving trips, and possibly off-roading too. And even if he doesn’t do the hard stuff, the ride and performance of the Jimny is perfect for the imperfect roads of the metro–and the weekly visits to our farm in Batangas. The Jimny is just the right size for a newbie driver.
Under the hood lies the familiar 1.5-liter K15B gasoline engine, delivering 101 horsepower and 130 Nm of torque. It comes paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission, while the AllGrip Pro 4WD system with low-range gearing ensures impressive off-road performance.
“Remember the contortions required to enter the back of the 3-door Jimny? Those days are gone,” Ron de los Reyes of Auto Review said.
Under the hood, the trusty 1.5-liter K15B gasoline engine delivers 101 horsepower and 130 Nm of torque. But the real upgrade lies in the transmission options. Choose between a 5-speed manual for true control on the trails or a 4-speed automatic for comfortable cruising on tarmac. And let’s not forget the legendary AllGrip Pro 4WD system with low-range gearing. Sandy beaches, mountain trails, even the occasional flood — the 5-door Jimny conquers them all with ease.
5-door Jimny comes in three variants. The GL MT at P1.558M is the most affordable entry point. The GLX AT is priced at P1.638M and offers the convenience of an automatic transmission for effortless city driving and highway cruising. For less than a hundred grand, you get a two-toned GLX AT at P1.708M.
So, are the added 2 doors worth the price difference?
So, are the added 2 doors worth the price difference? The 5-door Jimny isn’t just a bigger Jimny; it’s a reimagined one. It retains the off-road prowess, rugged charm, and iconic design that made the original a legend, but it adds practicality, versatility, and family-friendliness to the equation. For the pricing, it is obviously aimed at a different market. The 5-door won’t eat into the 3-door market, they are very much the same but extremely individual as well. Sir Tribs and I agree. If the increase in an average of P200K through the range, that’ll be an almost perfect scenario. — with Lech P. Quiambao

Certification irregularities at Toyota uncovered
TOYOTA Industries Corporation (TICO) reported unsettling findings to Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) in Japan. These findings involve potential certification irregularities connected to inappropriate domestic emissions certification for engines used in forklifts and construction machinery, which are also shared with a variety of Toyota vehicles sold globally.
TICO, entrusted by Toyota to develop diesel engines for automobiles, received a report from the special investigation committee led by Hiroshi Inoue. The investigation, commissioned by Toyota to TICO,
has unveiled irregularities in the certification process of three diesel engine models for automobiles, including those for earlier versions of the Fortuner, Hilux, and Innova, produced in the Middle East, India and Asia between May to July 2020. Vehicles produced for the Philippine market coming from Toyota Motor Thailand Co., Ltd., are included in the list.
During the certification testing, engines’ horsepower output performance was manipulated using ECUs with different software from mass production, resulting in artificially smoother and less variable performance values. Ten vehicle models globally, including six in Japan, are equipped with these affected engines.
“We have meticulously re-verified mass-produced products at the manufacturing plant and confirmed that the impacted engines and vehicles indeed meet the required engine performance output standards. Consequently, there is no necessity to halt the use of the affected engines or vehicles. Nevertheless, we deeply apologize to our valued customers who have supported these vehicles and endured an extended wait. Our sincere apologies extend to all stakeholders who have experienced significant inconvenience and concern due to these developments,” Inoue said in the press statement following the public announcement.
In light of the investigation’s outcomes, TICO has decided to temporarily halt shipments of the affected engines, and Toyota has likewise opted to suspend shipments of vehicles equipped with these engines. Moving forward, we will offer comprehensive explanations to the authorities and swiftly implement appropriate actions, which may include conducting tests under the observation of independent witnesses when deemed necessary.
Certification is pivotal, as it involves national authorities validating in advance that vehicles meet stringent standards, ensuring peace of mind for customers. The proper certification process is an essential foundation for any automobile manufacturer. We acknowledge the gravity of the situation, as repeated certification irregularities at TICO, following those at Daihatsu, have profoundly shaken the core of our identity as an automobile manufacturer.
“TICO has informed us of their intention to provide exhaustive explanations to the authorities, alongside implementing corrective measures under their guidance, to rebuild trust among customers and stakeholders as a reputable and certified manufacturer,” the press statement continued.
Furthermore, the restructuring of the affected business will require a fundamental shift in the mindset of all individuals, from leadership to employees, and a profound transformation of corporate culture. Such endeavors cannot be accomplished overnight. Consequently, Toyota, in its role as the entity responsible for transferring the diesel engine business, will continue to provide support in the revitalization of TICO’s engine business.
In their capacity as overseers of these tests, they acknowledge the lack of sufficient attention and awareness concerning the deviation from legal and regulatory procedures. Moving forward, they intend to actively engage in all company-wide initiatives aimed at assisting TICO’s recovery and conducting a comprehensive review of the situation to ensure that safety and quality remain paramount in all endeavors. — Raymond B.
