IN JUST over two months since its global debut, the new BMW R 1300 GS has once again demonstrated its exceptional off-road capabilities and rugged durability in the challenging terrain of South America.

From December 6 to 7 last year, a fleet of fully-equipped BMW R 1300 GS motorcycles embarked on an extraordinary journey, starting from sea level at the base of the Nevado Ojos del Salado, the world’s highest active volcano, standing at 6,893 meters above sea level. Within a remarkable 24-hour period, these motorcycles successfully ascended to an altitude exceeding 6,000 meters, with a particularly challenging segment known as the “Rock Channel” on the northern slope of Nevado Ojos del Salado, where they reached 6,006 meters after 19 hours and 22 minutes of relentless effort, ultimately achieving a maximum altitude of 6,027 meters.

This daring expedition unfolded against the backdrop of the Circuito de los Seis Miles, nestled within Chile’s Atacama Desert, which is home to the world’s highest chain of active volcanoes, including the Nevado Ojos del Salado. On December 6th, starting at 3:00 pm local time from Bahia Inglesa, a coastal town near Caldera’s port on the Pacific Ocean in the Atacama region, four standard BMW R 1300 GS motorcycles equipped with Metzeler Karoo 4 tires commenced their arduous journey towards Nevado Ojos Del Salado, culminating in their triumphant arrival on December 7 at 10:22 am local time.

Notably, this remarkable feat was accomplished using standard motorcycles and standard tires. The motorcycles featured 19″ front and 17″ rear tires, introducing a novel dimension to the realm of adventure riding.

Christof Lischka, BMW Motorrad Development Manager, expressed, “With this extreme ascent beyond 6,000 meters, the new BMW R 1300 GS has unequivocally showcased its prowess and purpose. Whether tackling off-road challenges, embarking on adventurous journeys, or maintaining a spirited pace on tarmac during extended tours, the BMW R 1300 GS excels in its standard configuration, even when equipped with off-road tires. It was crucial for us to underscore these fundamental strengths of the new GS through this remarkable expedition.”

The new BMW R 1300 GS comes equipped with Metzeler Tourance Next 2 tires as standard. However, for dedicated off-road enthusiasts, Metzeler Karoo 4 tires are available as an option, and they were the tire of choice for this expedition. These tires enhance the BMW R 1300 GS’s performance both off-road and on adventure tours, offering superb off-road traction suitable for various terrains, including sand, desert tracks, mud, and more. They also seamlessly integrate with the advanced rider assistance systems of the new BMW R 1300 GS.

The ascent to Nevado Ojos del Salado represents a grueling test for both riders and their motorcycles. The journey demands significant physical and mental endurance, as it must be completed within 24 hours. Moreover, participants confront a harsh environment above 5,000 meters, characterized by extremely low temperatures, with daytime temperatures hovering around -10°C and nighttime temperatures dropping to -20°C, as well as low oxygen levels.

Thorough preparation and acclimatization to the region are imperative. In the days leading up to the expedition, multiple base camps were established at different altitudes, and a simulation exercise was conducted on Mount Etna in Sicily, Europe’s highest active volcano. Additionally, expedition participants underwent comprehensive medical tests and evaluations in collaboration with the University of Enna and the health authorities of the province of Enna.

At altitudes exceeding 5,000 meters, the cold temperatures and reduced air pressure pose significant challenges to the electronic control systems of the Boxer engine, as well as other vehicle components of the new BMW R 1300 GS. The chassis and tires are subjected to rigorous testing on diverse terrain, encompassing rocky paths, unpaved roads, extensive sandy stretches, and at times, icy and snowy conditions.

Christof Lischka concludes, “I am thrilled that we undertook this extraordinary challenge with the new R 1300 GS and emerged victorious. In these adventurous journeys, the new GS has consistently showcased its remarkable off-road capabilities, even in its standard configuration, and has proven its mettle in the most extreme conditions.”
