ISUZU N-SERIES SMOOTHER: Changing the way trucks are driven

TRUCKS in the Philippines usually come with a manual transmission.  The reasons for this choice are fuel economy, cargo handling performance, ease of maintenance, and familiarity of use. Manual transmissions are found on light- and medium-duty trucks because the conventional automatic transmission exhibits performance losses when in hauling or pulling cargo.

However, in countries like Japan and Taiwan, a version of the manual transmission with an automatic clutch eases the burden on drivers. It keeps them focused on the task of safely delivering cargo, maneuvering in tight spaces or through heavy city traffic.

Called the Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) this technology is now found in the new Isuzu N-Series Smoother, which is the first light-duty truck with the innovative intelligent clutch-less gearshift system.

Isuzu N-Series Smoother AMT achieves automatic shift change by computer control.  This means the driver gets the performance of an MT on a 2-pedal operation combining the advantages of an AT’s easy driving operation and MT’s fuel efficiency.

“In the Philippines, trucks are maximized and utilized almost at 24/7 operations. And with the increasing demand for delivery, especially in logistics, truckers deal not just with the increase in their operating expenses, particularly fuel and maintenance, but also the need for more professional drivers which has become quite a problem. So, we thought, why not make our next truck address all these challenges and more,” IPC President Hajime Koso said.

The introduction of the vehicle is a response to recent developments in the market explains Joseph Bautista, IPC Sales Division Head. Bautista points to the rise of entrepreneurs and the need for more light trucks. This condition, fueled by the pandemic became the opportunity for Isuzu to further understand its market. Koso seconded this explanation saying that “Isuzu’s success comes from working closely with our customers, assessing their every need, and coming up with the best business solutions in every step of the way.”

During the press conference that followed the media introduction of the new truck, Isuzu’s Department Head for Product and Marketing Robert Carlos explained that the transmission is not a third-party brand but one developed and produced by Isuzu and used extensively in the Japanese domestic market.

The core benefits of the Isuzu N-Series Smoother include its ease of driving because its gearbox is designed like that of an AT and has 2 pedals only. New drivers can operate this truck with ease. During the launch event, the truck was handed over to a female guest and she was very able to drive the vehicle around the test track. This also means less fatigue for drivers during a long-distance driving or when in traffic-congested areas.

With the advanced technology of AMT, Isuzu N-Series Smoother automatically selects and shifts to the appropriate gear position.  This results in good fuel efficiency, saving you from high fuel expenses. And because it has no clutch pedal, there is no need to spend on clutch maintenance.  Also, with the 2-pedal operation, the driver does not need to worry about changing gears and can therefore focus on the driving environment.  Safe driving is given priority.

The Isuzu N-Series Smoother is powered by the 3.0-liter 4JJ1-TCC engine.  That is, a 4-cylinder, Turbo-intercooler, DOHC Common-rail Direct Injection, Blue Power Diesel Engine, with a maximum output of 124 PS and a maximum torque of 354 N-m.  It is equipped with Isuzu’s latest transmission model, MYY6S, which is a 6-speed AMT.  It has a GVW of 4,490 kg and can be fitted with various body applications, as below. It also has a Cab Tilt Warning Indicator for added safety.

Convenience features include an AM/FM radio with USB, 2 speakers, charger port, cab power window, central door lock, and an all-important cab tilt warning system that informs the driver that the cab is secure after servicing.  It also comes with a 3-year and unlimited mileage warranty.  A USB charging port comes as standard. The new light truck is now available at all authorized Isuzu dealerships nationwide for P1.6M for the cab and chassis configuration.
