HYUNDAI Motor Company has unveiled a groundbreaking campaign film showcasing its all-electric, self-driving IONIQ 5 robotaxi successfully navigating a rigorous driving test modeled after the U.S. driver’s license process.
The video, filmed in Las Vegas, emphasizes the safety, reliability, and inclusivity of the IONIQ 5 robotaxi’s autonomous driving technology.
The film opens with an interview featuring Pearl Outlaw, a visually impaired American woman, and her mother, Ruth. Pearl’s condition, Retinitis Pigmentosa, prevents her from obtaining a traditional driver’s license — a common barrier to independence for many with physical impairments. Her story underscores the potential of autonomous vehicles to revolutionize mobility and provide freedom for those unable to drive themselves.
To demonstrate the IONIQ 5 robotaxi’s capabilities, Hyundai enlisted Kandice Jones, a seasoned DMV Certified Driving Examiner with 25 years of experience. Jones subjected the robotaxi to the same criteria used to evaluate human drivers. The IONIQ 5 robotaxi performed exceptionally well in speed control, lane changes, maneuvering, accurate stops, left turns, lane maintenance, and hazard reaction time.
The test’s success, including navigating the bustling Las Vegas Strip and suburban areas, highlights the extensive collaboration between Hyundai Motor Group and Motional, a leading autonomous driving technology developer. The IONIQ 5 robotaxi utilizes an advanced sensor suite comprised of LiDAR, radar, and cameras, enabling consistent performance across diverse driving environments.
“This campaign showcases the impressive safety and trustworthiness of the IONIQ 5 robotaxi, emphasizing our commitment to developing autonomous driving technology that will positively impact people’s lives,” stated Sungwon Jee, Senior Vice President and Global Chief Marketing Officer at Hyundai Motor Company. — Lech Amadeus P.
