LAST FRIDAY, August 4, Toyota Motor Philippines Inc. (TMP) introduced its sixth hybrid vehicle, the all-new Toyota Yaris Cross, and even earlier last week, Chery Auto Philippines (CheryPH) launched the all-new Tiggo 5X and the new Tiggo 7 hybrids. All three vehicles were released alongside its ICE counterparts.

The three vehicles were launched offering the market electrified or semi-electrified vehicles minus range anxiety.

TOYOTA YARIS HYBRID

On one hand, TMP sees growth potential for hybrids driven by utility and life-enhancing technologies, “appealing to today’s drivers who pursue various passions.” This means offering practical hybrid electric vehicle choices to its customers alongside regular ICE engine vehicles.

The Toyota Yaris Cross is a full hybrid and is available in a GR spec. The Yaris Cross also has a regular ICE version too.

“In Toyota, we believe in a multiple pathway approach to achieve carbon neutrality. One of the ways we are empowering you, our customers, to help build a sustainable future is through electrified vehicles,” said TMP President Atsuhiro Okamoto, adding that Toyota’s strategy changes depending on the market and range anxiety.

“In the Philippines, we recognize the strong need to offer more options because, as of now, the charging station networks are still developing,” Okamoto told Malaya Business Insight in a short interview after the launch at the Amphitheater in Bonifacio Global City. He also mentioned that the Yaris Hybrid was simultaneously launched on August 4 at all of Toyota’s 72 dealerships nationwide.

“Toyota hopes to bring the electrified lifestyle even closer to more Filipinos quickly,” he said praising the current efforts for policy changes and infrastructure developments.

The all-new Yaris Cross, is an easy and practical Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) “providing a best-value package with a stunning modern design, advanced vehicle features,” according to Toyota.

The exterior boasts a solid and dynamic design with metallic colorways and black interiors with blue accents. LED headlamps, daytime running lamps, fog lamps, and a compact back door with geometric rear lights add sophistication. The HEV variant also features a panoramic moonroof for a premium touch.

It is powered by a 4-cylinder, in-line, 16-valve, dual VVT-i engine capable of producing 91 PS and 121 Nm of torque couple to a CVT transmission. In the hybrid trim the same engine is integrated to a lithium-ion battery-powered electric motor that outputs 80 PS and 141 Nm of torque via the same CVT transmission. This is a full hybrid set-up and depending on road and driving conditions, the car determines either using the ICE engine or cruising using the electric motor.

Inside, the thoughtful design elevates the riding experience with a 7-inch TFT multi-information display, wireless charging dock, and panoramic view monitor. Convenience features include electric power steering (EPS) and wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto with Bluetooth and voice command. The HEV variant has an exclusive 6-Speaker Pioneer system.

Safety features vary among the variants. The S HEV and V CVT come equipped with Toyota Safety Sense (TSS), including Pre-Collision System (PCS), Automatic High Beam (AHB), Lane Departure Alert (LDA), Lane Tracing Assist (LTA), and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). The G CVT variant has active safety features such as Electronic Brake Distribution (EBS), Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), and Hill-Start Assist Control (HAC).

Available in three variants — the 1.5 S HEV CVT priced at P1.598M. The standard ICE 1.5 V CVT starts at P1.296M and the 1.5 G CVT P1.199M.

CHERY’S STRATEGY HINGES ON PRODUCT, PEOPLE

CheryPH, on the other hand, released two mild-hybrids, the Tiggo 5X and Tiggo 7, and is witnessing a transitional phase in the market to ensure continuous adaptation to electrified vehicles. During the launch event the company also introduced an industry veteran to lead the company.

Chery Tiggo 5X is a mild hybrid.

“We are excited to introduce the new Chery Tiggo 5X Pro Hybrid to Filipino new car buyers. With its upmarket styling, efficient hybrid drivetrain, and premium features, we expect it to surprise and delight Filipinos who want to get more from their subcompact crossover,” Froilan Dytianquin, newly appointed Chery Auto Philippines Managing Director.

Dytianquin, a seasoned automotive industry veteran has more than 30 years of expertise in the automotive industry that is expected to drive Chery Auto Philippines to a new era of change, growth, and innovation.

Throughout his distinguished career, Dytianquin has been recognized as one of the pillars of the automotive industry. He started in 1992, with Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC) retiring as First Vice President after working for the company after more than 26 years. He then joined Geely Philippines as both General Manager and head the Sales and Marketing Department. Dytianquin explains the rationale behind the launch of the electrified hybrids.

“But it is not only about a new car. We are also announcing our new corporate tagline: “There’s More to Our Cars.” This statement speaks beyond a tagline; it represents a profound brand commitment. It signifies our promise to deliver not just innovative and world-class vehicles but an unparalleled ownership experience. From the joy of owning to the fun of driving, all complemented by our unbeatable warranty program–the Chery Premium Preserv and exceptional aftersales support. “There’s More to Our Cars” encapsulates our dedication to providing a holistic and elevated driving experience, surpassing expectations and catering to the diverse needs and desires of our esteemed customers.

“We always work with new blood and experienced people. That is why we have this mix of talents now at Chery. UAAGI was built on collaboration, with a dynamic team of various experiences, and ages. We are a relatively young team and young company, and I personally welcome Froilan to the team and know that his experience will elevate the brand to new heights,” Rommel Sytin, United Asia Automotive Group, Inc. (UAAGI) Chairman, also expressing his elation at the new management personalities Dytianquin brought with him from across other brands.

“Chery’s options are complete–we have the vehicles that are pure battery electric, plug-in hybrids, and mild hybrids, and a team to take care of our customers and dealers well,” Sytin shared.

The Chery 5X Pro, is a compact crossover, costs P1.140M and comes with a 1 million kilometer or engine warranty, a five-year/150,000-km general vehicle warranty, free three years of preventive maintenance service (PMS), and free three years of roadside assistance.

The updated Tiggo 7 Pro Hybrid, a larger SUV, costs P1.350M but shares the turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system putting out 154hp and 230Nm of torque, with a nine-speed continuously variable transmission (CVT). Chery claims the powertrain reduces emissions by 14 percent and cuts fuel consumption by 13 percent.

“Tonight, Chery Auto Philippines begins a new era of change. We are embarking on a serious path in keeping the needs of our past, present, and future customers at the core of everything we do. We are serious about giving our customers a competitive end-to-end Chery ownership experience,” Sytin concluded.
