THE latest BMW R 1300 GS takes the GS legacy to the “Next level,” introducing a new boxer engine and suspension system that significantly reduces weight and enhances overall GS performance.
“With the new BMW R 1300 GS we will once again take the competition by surprise. It is defined by an even broader spread of product substance, while the reduction in complexity and vehicle weight, combined with focused equipment, enable the essence of the boxer GS to be showcased even more strikingly. With a new engine, outstanding handling and impressive ride qualities, it will set the pace both on and off the road,” Thilo Fuchs, Head of Water-cooled Boxer Models at BMW said in a press statement.
BMW Motorrad pioneered the touring enduro segment over four decades ago with the R 80 G/S, and the boxer engine GS has remained the benchmark in the field. To secure its leadership position, BMW Motorrad has designed the new R 1300 GS from the ground up, achieving a remarkable weight reduction of 12 kg compared to the previous model.
At the heart of this motorcycle is the legendary two-cylinder boxer engine, now more compact than ever with a gearbox located under the engine and a redesigned camshaft drive arrangement. Generating 107 kW (145 hp) at 7,750 rpm and a peak torque of 149 Nm at 6,500 rpm from its 1,300 cc, this marks the most powerful BMW boxer engine in series production.
The main frame, constructed from sheet metal shell, has been optimized for installation space and stiffness, offering improved performance over the previous model. The rear frame has transitioned to a die-cast aluminum construction, and the new EVO Telelever front wheel guide and revised EVO Paralever rear wheel guide contribute to superior steering precision and stability.
The introduction of electronic Dynamic Suspension Adjustment (DSA) as optional equipment offers dynamic damping and spring rate adjustments, adapting to riding modes, conditions, and maneuvers, delivering a thrilling riding experience across all terrains.
Additional optional equipment includes adaptive vehicle height control and a sports suspension, catering to diverse riding preferences.
The new R 1300 GS comes with four standard riding modes: “Rain,” “Road,” “Eco,” and “Enduro,” allowing riders to adapt to various road conditions and maximize fuel efficiency, with “Enduro” mode enhancing off-road capabilities.
Standard features include Matrix LED headlamps with an innovative design for improved visibility. State-of-the-art LED light units incorporate integrated turn indicators in the hand protectors. The optional “Headlight Pro” dynamically adjusts the headlamp beam to the motorcycle’s banking position.
Safety enhancements include the Riding Assistant option, featuring Active Cruise Control (ACC), Front Collision Warning (FCW), and Lane Change Warning (LCW) to ensure safe and convenient riding.
The new R 1300 GS offers a range of variants, including the basic variant embodying GS essentials, Triple Black with a masculine aesthetic, GS Trophy with a sporty off-road focus, and Option 719 Tramuntana with exclusive design elements, cross-spoke wheels in gold, and a distinctive paint finish in Aurelius Green metallic complemented by milled aluminum parts.”
