THE launch of the Mazda CX-90 was not ostentatious, nor glitzy. It was a laid back but extremely luxurious event befitting what is the pinnacle of ‘Mazda Premium’–a positioning unique to the newest luxury SUV, very much anticipated by buyers in this segment.
“It offers powerful and responsive performance, alluring design, and intuitive technology. The CX-90 is a breakthrough vehicle not just in its segment, but in our quest to become a brand with premium aspirations,” Steven Tan, President and CEO of Mazda Philippines said at the very dignified launch event as he also emphasized the CX-90’s significance in Mazda’s journey towards achieving premium brand status.
The vehicle’s pricing confirms its premium status. The Mazda CX-90 3.3L AWD HEV Turbo Exclusive is priced at P3.780M while the CX-90 3.3L AWD HEV Turbo will cost P3.680M.
Built on Mazda’s Large Product Platform, the CX-90 features a front-engine, rear-wheel-bias all-wheel-drive layout, which enhances the brand’s signature driving performance. Kinematic Posture Control (KPC) has been incorporated to minimize body roll during cornering, providing improved grip and stability for all occupants. Rigidity optimization across the vehicle body, along with meticulous seat and suspension design, ensures a balanced, controlled, and confident driving experience in various situations.
Powering the CX-90 is an innovative e-Skyactiv-G 3.3-liter inline-6 turbo engine, boasting 284 PS at 5,000 to 6,000 rpm and 450 Nm of torque at 2,000 to 3,500 rpm when fueled with 91 to 95 RON gasoline. The addition of a 48-volt Hybrid System enhances efficiency without compromising performance.
This hybrid system features an integrated electric motor generating 16.9 PS and 153 Nm of torque, positioned between the engine and transmission. This setup allows the electric motor to independently power the CX-90, resulting in smooth acceleration from a standstill and an overall refined driving experience. When the lithium-ion battery is adequately charged, the CX-90 can operate solely on electric power, further improving fuel efficiency.
The CX-90 incorporates an eight-speed automatic transmission tailored for electrified powertrains and large platform vehicles. This multi-speed automatic gearbox, without a torque converter, delivers seamless and direct acceleration while enhancing drivetrain efficiency.
Mazda’s Intelligent Drive Select (Mi-DRIVE) system offers four selectable drive modes: Normal, Sport, Off-Road, and Towing, ensuring outstanding performance and safety in various driving environments.
The spacious CX-90, with its extended dimensions, including a length of 5,120 mm, width of 1,994 mm, and a longer wheelbase of 3,120 mm, provides ample canvas for its sleek design. Chrome accents and available 21-inch diamond-cut wheels with a black metallic finish complement its commanding presence. Mazda’s exclusive Takuminuri color, Artisan Red Premium, adds a touch of sophistication.
The dignified design language extends into the cabin, where meticulous attention to detail creates an expansive and modern interior. Inspired by traditional Japanese aesthetics, the interior features premium materials like supple Nappa leather and Leganu suede inserts. The CX-90 offers multiple seating configurations, with the option to seat eight adults (2+3+3) or opt for a six-seater setup (2+2+2). Accessibility to the third-row seats is made easy through thoughtfully designed rear doors and a one-touch walk-in switch for the second-row bench seat.
The CX-90’s luggage capacity is impressive, offering 257 liters behind the second- and third-row seats. Folding down the third row increases cargo space to 1,163 liters, and with both seating rows folded flat, the capacity expands to a substantial 2,025 liters. Loading and unloading long objects are made convenient with a flat tailgate opening and a hands-free power tailgate.
Inside, the CX-90 boasts advanced technologies and amenities, including three high-definition displays, a 12.3-inch infotainment center display, a fully-digital 12.3-inch driver’s instrument panel, and a 10.4-inch heads-up display. The Mazda Connect system offers wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto connectivity, while a 12-speaker Bose sound system delivers an exceptional auditory experience. Additional cabin amenities include tri-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, rear door sunshades, USB-C charging ports, ambient lighting, and more.
The Mazda Driver Personalization System uses facial recognition technology to automatically adjust various settings to match the driver’s preferences, enhancing personalization and comfort. Driver Entry/Exit Assist simplifies ingress and egress by automatically adjusting the seats and steering wheel for recognized drivers.
Safety is a top priority, with the CX-90 equipped with Mazda’s i-Activsense safety features, such as Front and Rear Smart Brake Support, Mazda Radar Cruise Control, Adaptive LED Headlamps, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Monitoring, and more. The 360° View Monitor aids in parking situations by displaying obstacles in blind spots on the 12.3-inch center display.
Tan emphasized that the Mazda CX-90 represents a new dimension in luxury SUVs, combining exceptional craftsmanship with human-centric technologies, creating a sophisticated and dynamic vehicle for families and adventure enthusiasts. The first-ever Mazda CX-90 is available in seven colors and two variants.
