ANNUALLY, Europe’s leading heavy truck manufacturers compete in the “Green Truck” competition, a rigorous assessment organized by German trade magazines, Trucker and VerkehrsRundschau. This prestigious test identifies the most fuel-efficient and sustainable long-haul truck on the market. Swedish manufacturer Scania has established an impressive track record in this competition, consistently demonstrating its commitment to developing innovative, efficient transport solutions.

Scania’s success in the “Green Truck” competition is unmatched. Apart from a single runner-up position in 2023, the Sí¶dertälje-based manufacturer has been awarded the coveted title of “Green Truck” for seven of the past eight years. Since the competition’s inception in 2011, Scania has won an astonishing nine out of 14 contests.

“Our Super-based powertrain, introduced in 2021, has been a game-changer in terms of fuel efficiency,” explains Stefan Dorski, Senior Vice President and Head of Scania Trucks.  “Our customers directly benefit from the 8% fuel savings it offers, making a positive impact on both their bottom line and environmental footprint.”

The “Green Truck” award underscores the critical importance of transport efficiency within the trucking industry. Scania has actively participated in numerous European press tests, recognizing that fuel-efficient vehicles are indispensable  in addressing environmental concerns and curbing  CO2 emissions.

The winner of the “Green Truck” competition is determined using a comprehensive formula that evaluates a truck’s fuel consumption, average speed, AdBlue usage, and overall vehicle weight. Scania consistently excels in these metrics. Compared to its closest competitor, Scania trucks demonstrate a remarkable 0.41-liter fuel advantage over a 100 km distance. This translates to an annual fuel savings of over 600 liters for a truck covering roughly 150,000 km per year. Notably, Scania’s vehicle also achieved the highest average speed and was the lightest in the competition. Its recently updated Cruise Control with Active Prediction system is also credited with giving Scania an edge in the test.

The “Green Truck” test is conducted on a variety of roads, primarily motorways, surrounding Munich. Organizers and manufacturers closely monitor all tests, and a reference truck is used to account for changing environmental factors. This ensures accuracy and fairness while promoting the development of efficient trucks that excel in real-world conditions.

Scania’s unwavering success in the “Green Truck” competition highlights its relentless pursuit of efficiency and sustainability. As the global transportation sector strives to reduce its environmental impact, Scania stands as a frontrunner, driving innovation that benefits both operators and the planet.
