The BFP, as the primary fire service agency in the Philippines, plays a crucial role in ensuring public safety amidst the EV revolution. Alongside private firefighting teams in condominiums, hotels, and mall parking lots, the BFP must be adequately prepared to handle the specific fire risks posed by EVs.
Addressing the challenges of EV fires requires a multi-faceted approach that encompasses several key areas:
1. Budget allocation and equipment acquisition. Adequate funding is paramount in equipping firefighters with the necessary tools and resources to combat EV fires effectively.
This includes procuring specialized equipment such as: fire blankets designed to smother EV fires and prevent reignition. Class D fire extinguishers specifically formulated for extinguishing metal fires, including those involving lithium-ion batteries. Thermal imaging cameras to detect hotspots and hidden fires within the vehicle’s structure.
