Geely is back, launches new EX5 full EV

GEELY has become one of the best-selling Chinese automotive brands since it entered the local market in 2019.

The tech-rich and European-designed Geely Coolray kicked off Geely’s foray into a market dominated by Japanese-branded automobiles.

A media test drive held in Hangzhou, China early in 2019 compared the Coolray to at least five leading models in its class and the Coolray proved to be at par if not better than the name brands.

Geely then introduced the bigger Azkara Hybrid and Okabango SUVs, the Emgrand sedan, and the subcompact crossover, the GX3 Pro.

After undergoing a transition, Geely has come back with renewed energy under Geely Motor Philippines Corporation (GMP), a newly formed subsidiary of Geely Automotive International Corporation (GAIC).

In a grand relaunch held last week at the Filinvest Tent in Muntinlupa City, Geely showcased its new and high-value products and improved operations in the country.

Geely said it has enhanced its customer-centric approach, particularly with faster response times, individualized customer services, and increased user value through exclusive services and promotions.

GMP president Will Wan said, “Innovation and exclusivity are at the heart of Geely’s operations.” He added, “Geely will not only be making cars, but we are also creating a better way of living.”

Taking center stage at the event was the globally-acclaimed Geely EX5 which is trying to set a new standard in energy mobility in the Philippines.

The EX5 boasts a bold and dynamic exterior design, highlighted by a sleek, aerodynamic profile that achieves a class-leading drag coefficient of 0.269. The sophisticated LED taillights and technological front grille further emphasize its modern aesthetics. Inside, the EX5 offers a luxurious interior, characterized by a minimalist design philosophy and comfortable materials.

The spacious cabin is enhanced by flexible seating options and the “Half More” storage concept, providing up to 50 percent more storage capacity than the industry average level. To elevate the in-car experience, the EX5 is equipped with the FLYME Auto system and FLYME SOUND, delivering seamless connectivity and an immersive audio experience.

As a testament to automotive innovation, Geely has equipped the EX5 with the latest “Short Blade Battery”, offering what its marketing men called, “safety and durability that passed rigorous tests under extreme conditions.”

Partnered with the 11-in-1 intelligent electric drive, it is touted as efficient and could deliver a new benchmark in electrified mobility.

I had test-driven the EX5 in Hangzhou late last year and wondered when Geely would bring such an outstanding EV to the Philippines. GMP finally answered in last week’s event.

I was impressed not only by the EX5 but also by how a good part of China has improved the quality of air.

The media preview was held at Ningbo City where Geely also operates. With more than 60 journalists from 20 countries present, several units of the EX5 were unveiled in an outdoor setting by the lakeside.

It was a glamping experience with tents, food, and drinks plus band music as a treat.

GMP marketing director Shawn Wu was with us all the time. Shawn said the actual test drive would be held at the Ningbo International Speedway, a probing ground of Geely.

Going there was a two-hour shuttle ride passing through the second longest bridgeway in China, the 36-kilometer Majestic Bridge.

After some briefing and familiarization with the tracks, we did a gymkhana type of test with the EX5 passing through very narrow passes. It demonstrated the versatility and ease of handling of the vehicle and its smooth quiet ride.

At the 4.8-kilometer Speedway, we drove alone following only a lead car, and at some straights, we reached 120 kms per hour.

Again, we felt the smooth drive, especially in the corners. The brakes were excellent and we were very stable even if we sometimes did some late braking on the curves.

It was such an exhilarating drive that most of us raved about the experience.

The car can zoom from 0-100 kph in 6.9 seconds and can have a top speed of 175 kph. It has a pure electric driving range of 495 kms.

The Geely EX5 is here and the good news is that GMP is giving introductory discounts to customers.

Discounts are also available for the enhanced Coolray and Emgrand models which were also previewed at the event.
