AS THE 2025 election season in the Philippines begins with the filing of Certificates of Candidacy (COCs), Kaspersky, a global leader in cybersecurity and digital privacy, has urged Filipinos to prioritize their online security.

The cybersecurity company warned that cybercriminals often take advantage of election periods to target both individuals and organizations, aiming to compromise sensitive data and manipulate public opinion. With the rise of digital threats, Kaspersky emphasizes that online safety is crucial not only for candidates and their teams but also for ordinary citizens, who may unknowingly fall victim to cyberattacks.

“Elections are not only a concern for candidates and their campaign teams. Ordinary citizens are also at risk of falling victim to cyberattacks, as cybercriminals often exploit personal information to spread disinformation, influence public opinion, and propagate fake news. That’s why it’s essential for everyone–not just organizations–to stay vigilant, be informed about potential cyber threats, and take steps to protect themselves online,” said Adrian Hia, Managing Director for Asia Pacific at Kaspersky.

Hia also emphasized that protecting oneself from these cyber threats requires awareness and proactive measures. Kaspersky has warned that during election periods, the risk of cyberattacks increases significantly, as malicious actors attempt to interfere with the electoral process. One of the primary methods attackers use is social media platforms, where they can gather personal information to manipulate public opinion.

Phishing attacks also pose a major threat, with cybercriminals sending fraudulent emails or messages disguised as official communications from campaign teams or government agencies. Additionally, the spread of fake news, such as altered election results or false candidate statements, is a tactic used to confuse and mislead voters.

Kaspersky urged both individuals and organizations to take appropriate measures to protect themselves from these threats. While organizations are encouraged to regularly update software, back up data, and monitor network activity to detect unusual behaviors, individuals are advised to be cautious about sharing personal information online, avoid public Wi-Fi, and stay updated on the latest security patches.

Furthermore, Hia recommends the use of trusted security solutions, such as its Kaspersky Premium, to help block phishing, spam, and other malicious threats. Throughout the election period, Kaspersky remains dedicated to helping users understand and respond to emerging cyber risks, offering comprehensive solutions that provide real-time protection against digital threats.
