RECENT research from Trend Micro has highlighted a significant increase in the use of AI-based tools by cybercriminals, leading to easier and more accessible methods for launching attacks at scale. These attacks can lead to extortion, identity theft, fraud, and misinformation.

The leading global cybersecurity vendor has announced new innovations in its enterprise platform aimed at protecting businesses and consumers from the escalating threat of AI-based attacks and fraud.

Ian Felipe, Trend Micro Philippines Country Manager, emphasized the company’s commitment to combating these threats, stating, “Our latest research reveals several new deepfake tools that make it easy for cybercriminals at all skill levels to launch damaging scams, social engineering, and security bypass attempts. We are leading the industry in fighting back for both our enterprise and consumer customers with new capabilities to detect deepfakes and other forms of AI fraud.”

The company’s new deepfake detection technology, soon to be available in the Trend Vision One platform, employs a variety of advanced methods to identify AI-generated content. This technology addresses the growing concerns over deepfakes, which pose significant risks to businesses and individuals, including misleading information, financial losses, job losses, legal challenges, reputation damage, identity theft, and potential harm to mental or physical health.

Gartner analyst Dan Ayoub underscored the necessity of such technology, stating, “Readily available, high-quality GenAI applications are now capable of creating photo-realistic video content that can deceive or mislead an audience. Given the low barriers to entry in using these tools and their increasing sophistication, developing a methodological approach to detecting GenAI deepfake content has become necessary.”

Trend Micro’s research has also revealed a shift in cybercriminal tactics, with a growing preference for exploiting existing LLM models through jailbreaking techniques rather than developing custom AI tools. This highlights the evolving nature of AI-based threats and the need for continuous innovation in cybersecurity solutions.

The launch of Trend Micro’s new solutions is part of a company-wide mission to secure customers’ adoption of artificial intelligence (AI). To support a zero trust strategy, Trend Micro has also recently introduced new features for Trend Vision One. These features aim to centralize the management of employees’ Generative AI access and usage, inspect prompts to prevent data leaks and malicious injections, filter GenAI content to meet compliance requirements, and defend against large language model (LLM) attacks.
