INSTRUCTURE’S 2023 State of Student Success and Engagement in Higher Education report highlights a growing preference among Filipino students for skills-based learning. The survey, conducted in 17 countries, including the Philippines, found that 77 percent of Filipino students are motivated to pursue skills-based learning to acquire new skills, while 68 percent see it as a path to career advancement. This shift aligns with the evolving demands of the modern workforce, which increasingly values adaptability and a diverse skill set.

As students seek practical and relevant education, certificate programs and apprenticeships are gaining traction. The report indicates that 43 percent of Filipino students consider certificates as a preferred skills-based learning option, followed by apprenticeships (39 percent). This trend is prompting higher education institutions to adapt their offerings, focusing on micro-credentials and programs that align with student and employer expectations.

The survey also explored the integration of generative AI in education, revealing a cautious approach. While nearly half (46 percent) of Filipino respondents reported their institutions introducing light guidelines on generative AI use, only 28 percent have strict guidelines in place. Despite this cautiousness, educators recognize the potential of generative AI for content creation (62 percent), research and writing (56 percent), and personalized learning (53 percent).

The report identifies technology affordability as a significant challenge, with 61 percent of students and educators citing it as a barrier to edtech adoption. Additionally, socioeconomic factors like household income (53 percent) and psychological well-being (46 percent) influence student engagement. To address these concerns, institutions are leveraging LMS platforms to connect students to counseling, support groups, and well-being initiatives.

As higher education institutions adapt to the evolving demands of students and employers, the report highlights important findings. First is embracing skills-based learning by offering flexible learning options, micro-credentials, and programs that align with industry needs. Next is to leverage technology effectively by addressing technology affordability concerns and provide adequate training and support. And finally prioritizing student well-being by fostering a supportive environment that addresses socioeconomic and psychological factors affecting engagement.

“That is why, it is important to consider methods of preventing information security policy violations when ensuring security, i.e. to implement an integrated approach to cybersecurity. According to our research, in addition to 26 percent of cyber incidents being caused by information security policies violation, 38 percent of breaches occur due to human mistakes. As the numbers are alarming, it is necessary to create a cybersecurity culture in an organization from the get-go by developing and enforcing security policies, as well as raising cybersecurity awareness among employees. Thus, the staff will approach the rules more responsibly and clearly understand the possible consequences of their violations,” Volk comments.
